Is it time for your house to be rewired and how much should it cost?

Have you or are you considering whether or not you should have your home either fully or partially rewired? A complete rewiring of your home won’t exactly be cheap but is usually between £2.5k - 3.5k depending on who you hire, and where you live in the UK.
Remember that you’ll need a team of electricians who know exactly what they’re doing because you don’t want the safety of your family compromised by cutting any corners. We’re talking about the potential for serious accidents as a result of fire or electrocution.
How do you know when your home needs rewiring?
This will become most evident when you’re planning on moving to a new property. It will have old fashioned light switches (round and black usually) and old sockets that don’t look like their more modern white counterparts. Your fuse box may be a more rudimentary wooden box.
Experienced electricians need to carry out rewiring
You’ll need a thorough full risk assessment by experienced electricians who are qualified to carry out this type of job, so it’s done safely. During the rewiring process, and this applies whether you’re having a partial or full rewire, it will largely depend on whether fuse boards or sockets need to be replaced.
Once a risk assessment has taken place and the electricians know what needs to be done, they’ll carry out a comprehensive list of tasks that will complete the full rewire. This will include:
Fitting new cables
All TV aerial and telephone sockets to be rewired
Fitting a new fuse box
Power and lights will have a complete rewire
Add light fixtures and switches, sockets and move existing ones around if needed
If you’re looking for new types of lighting and cables for speakers, then we’ll also install those.
There are two separate phases for rewiring, the replacement first involves the wiring, circuits, fuse boxes and cabling. In the second phase this will be the part where light fittings, switches and sockets are installed.
Picking the right team, budgets and benefits of rewiring
Look around before you finally decide on who you’re going to work with and consider your budget and what you think you’re willing to pay. Keep in mind that a rewiring could increase the value of your home should you decide to sell in the future. Once everything has been installed and is working okay, you need to think about when to have it tested so that it’s working properly, this should be done every 10 years according to building regulations, if you’re a landlord then it’s a shorter period of 5 years.
