Electric Vehicles and Electrical Safety

Website Editor

With climate change high on the agenda it makes sense that electric cars are becoming more popular as a source of fuel. They’re still fairly new and what most people know is that they need to be charged after a certain amount of use and distance, much in the same way a car needs diesel or petrol if it runs on fuel.

The Safety of electric vehicles is crucial.

There are some safety points to be aware of and we’re going to be talking about that shortly, so our focus is on the safety of electric vehicles. That way you always get to where you need to be in one piece safely and in a car that can make such a positive impact on the environment.

Make sure you know the instructions and how to maintain your electric car before you get in it.

When you buy your vehicle make sure to familiarise yourself with the instructions it comes with and that comes to driving it and before you charge it. All electric cars are waterproof, as are the charging stations,  so if it rains while you’re driving it’s highly unlikely you’ll get a shock. If you notice any problems it’s a good idea to get in touch with the manufacturer of your car so you can have peace of mind.

Charging your vehicle.

When charging your car never use an extension lead as this could put too much pressure on the power supply and cause an accident, e.g. fire or shock.

Cables should be purchased from your manufacturer.

Also, make doubly sure you don’t buy your cable from a disreputable retailer and only buy one that was recommended by your manufacturer. If you are going to be charging from a place in your home, always ensure you have the right fuse, and that the charging cable isn’t worn out or showing signs of wear.

Wall box charging point.

If you are thinking of charging from home then it would be a good idea to invest in an electric vehicle charging point exclusively for the use of your vehicle. Make sure you use a registered, qualified and experienced electrician to do the job so it’ll provide a safe and secure charging point.

Charge from home and eliminate stress.

People are often put off by the fact that there won’t be enough charging points for the amount of electric cars there are currently, largely because they’ve become so popular in recent years. And who can blame them with the growing concern over the environment?

Safe to use and a secure charging point.

If you do decide to charge from home you won’t need to worry too much about finding outdoor charging stations. Although of course, it’s important it’s a safe area you use and that you follow the advice in this post, e.g. avoid multi-socket extension leads and have a walled off charging box.
