Downlight Installation and Safety

Website Editor

Downlights are gorgeous aren't they? It’s no wonder they’re in such high demand. However, the downside is that if they’re installed by the wrong people it can end in disaster. If they’re installed by the unqualified and/or inexperienced who decide to put downlights in themselves it could result in serious injury. Poorly installed downlights can result in electrical fires which can have far-reaching consequences.

Always use a registered, trained and qualified engineer.

To stay safe it’s incredibly important to make sure you have an electrician who is professionally trained and qualified to carry out a job like this. There are different types of downlights and it’s important you understand the differences between each one and which one is suitable for you before going ahead and purchasing one.

Downlights can look elegant and sophisticated.

Downlights are light fixtures which are installed in hollow openings on the ceiling. They look amazing and create a really ambient mood which is a great alternative to harsh lighting. Downlights are able to look like they’re a part of the ceiling rather than sticking out and appearing separate.

Downlights operate at 12 volts or 120 volts.

They can also be described as fire rated and come with in-built protection that will seal the downlight if there’s a fire in the room below you, so a fire doesn’t spread. Fire rated downlights are clearly a far better option and are recommended by Electrical Safety First - they also recommend that the fire rated downlights you use come with fitted aluminium reflector lamps so heat is kept out of the cavities.

We are trained to install downlights.

We highly recommend you hire VC Electrical’s electricians should you decide to have downlights installed, but if you’re fitting them yourselves, or replacing one, always make sure you follow the manufacturer’s instructions, check all the packaging, wattage and ensure all electricity is switched off before you change a lamp. Never fit a cool beam reflector lamp, also known as a dichroic. Fit only aluminium reflector maps and err on the side of caution. Don’t use anything if it appears damaged.
