Your Guide to Garden Office Electrics

Website Editor

Perhaps you’re self-employed and enjoy working from home, or you’ve been relegated to home office working since the pandemic and you’ve now decided to do it permanently. Remote working isn’t for everyone, but it’s certainly something you can learn to love and many have. Whatever the reasons, you may now want to make it permanent and create an area where you can work every day in perfect harmony with your surroundings. There may be one, two, or even three of you working together as a team, and a garden office may be a great meeting/workplace for you all - either 5 days a week or just for a couple of days.

An office of your very own.

A garden office would be the ideal place to work, but there are certain factors you need to consider. Electrics are going to be a prime consideration, because you’ll need a power supply to use your laptop and you’ll need to have some sockets installed so you can fit more in, perhaps another internet connection and power for lights and extra laptop, monitors and desktops so you can work comfortably either by yourself or alongside others. To make your building functional it needs an installation that’s been carefully thought out and constructed by a trained professional.

Cables, circuits, heating and lighting.

Naturally, the distance between your office and the house will determine how much cable will be needed, and any new circuits to be added to your fuse box. An experienced electrician will need to talk to you at length to help determine how many sockets you’ll need, and how much heating and lighting you’ll require, and from that they will be able to come up with an electrical package that serves its purpose.

All those gadgets need power.

Carefully consider whether or not you’ll be needing any more power sockets for all the gadgets you’ll be using, could you possibly do with some data cabling? Think about it now and not after you’ve finished as it could work out expensive and messy.

Last minute details.

You might be happy to have standard white sockets or you may be after something more high spec and want something that little bit more slick, such as brushed steel plates or chrome for your switches and sockets. Also, consider the security, will you be leaving your computer equipment in the office overnight and thus require an alarm?
