A Guide to Home EV Charging

Website Editor

We’re taking a look at EV charging points, the benefits, the challenges and what you should consider when having charging points installed.

Some of the main benefits of charging your car at home is that it’s cheaper and more convenient. It’s also much safer, so you’re likely to find that your car will not pose a danger to you or your family. This is because none of you will be in the car for any significant amount of time while charging, as it can be done overnight.

Let’s look at each of these things in a little more detail -

Safety

You’ll have charging points of course and these will be attached to your fuseboard, so they’ll be safe and easy to use when you need them. Another advantage is that you can check your electricity meter to see how much you use so it’s much easier to budget effectively. You can also apply for a government grant to help with installation - so your costs could be significantly lower.

Avoiding electrical accidents is far easier with a home charging point.

You’ll also find that charging points are designed to provide protection from overload to avoid electrical accidents, so both you and your family are safe. And inclement weather poses no problem for them because they’re weatherproof. So all the safety measures have been covered.

Convenience

Because you already have a home charging point, you won’t need to queue to fill up your car. There are more and more public charging points all the time, but it can be the bane of your life trying to find one, especially without a queue. With a home charging station, you’ve eliminated that problem. You can also top up your car whenever your car is at home parked up in the garage, and also charge overnight, so you’ll always have a full battery by the following day.

Requirements

If you want to have a charging point for EV charging there are some requirements you’ll need to meet to make this happen.

  • You will need a garage or driveway, you can’t do this in the street

  • You also need to be the homeowner, or have explicit permission from your landlord to have an installation.

If you have both these requirements, then you can get in touch with us here at VC Electrical and we can come and install your charging points.

Increase the value of your property with a home charging point.

Another clear benefit is that with EV charging points in your home, you’ll boost the value of your property too. The value you get on your property could exceed the cost of installation, so it’s definitely worth thinking about.

What type of charging point will you need?

You may now be thinking about what kind of charging point you’re going to need if you decide to go with a home EV charging point. There are a number of different ones available with different wattage and different cars such as hybrids and full electric cars. They will all require different types of charger as you can imagine. We can talk you through this when you contact us about your EV charging points.

Sockets and charging cables.

Some charge points will use standard sockets while others will simply use your car’s charging cable, or even a buit-in tethered cable. Always ask us, and one of our dedicated team members will be more than happy to talk it through before we fit anything, we’re here to help.
