Electrical Safety in Bedrooms

Website Editor

You might be surprised to know that the most time people spend in any one particular room is the bedroom. This is where we all spend the majority of our time and the figures bear this out. And who can blame anyone for wanting to spend more time in the bedroom when you can do everything you want in comfort? It’s probably the one place you can truly chill out in, what with TVs, books and gaming at your fingertips. Why go anywhere else, when you can do it from the comfort of your bed?

As you can imagine then with all these electrical devices at work, it’s important we consider the safety of those that use them. Boring? Well, possibly, but electrical accidents can and do happen. In order to avoid accidents and potentially avert a more serious one resulting in death, we must ensure the electrical safety of those who occupy the bedroom at all times.

How can we do this?

Well, our expert electricians come up with some safeguards you can follow to keep you and your family as safe as possible when they’re in the bedroom.

Piles of clothes and books are a fire waiting to happen.

Firstly, don’t leave clothes in a pile as this is a real fire hazard as are books and magazines, try and put them away in cupboards, wardrobes and shelving. Invest in storage space if you can and put things where you can find them so they’re not cluttering up floors and any other available space. You also need to make sure you’re not blocking any exits.

Don’t leave your devices on charge all night.

If you have phones and tablets, then at night after you’ve finished using them you might be tempted to leave them on charge all night. However, they can overheat and catch fire. With this in mind, we would recommend that you don’t leave them charging unattended overnight. Charge them during the day and on a hard surface.

Overloading extensions and sockets is never a good idea.

Don’t overload extension leads and preferably don’t use them at all because they can be a fire hazard. It’s never a good idea to overload a socket so don’t do it.

Fire alarms are important on every floor.

Make sure you have a fire alarm on every floor where possible, it’ll give you more of a chance to hear it when it goes off so you can exit the building quickly should there be a fire.

Are your cables and sockets in need of replacement?

Check all sockets and cables for wear and tear and make sure that if they are looking a little worn and damaged you replace them as soon as possible. Also, keep any portable heaters away from clothes or blankets.
